Bucharest is not exactly a famous tourist destination or high on anyone’s list of must visit destinations, but the Romanian city has charms that you shouldn’t overlook.

1. Cheap currency

Although Romania joined the EU in 2007, they’re not a part of Eurozone. Instead, their currency is still Romanian leu (RON) which is much cheaper than Euro. The attractions, transportation and food in Bucharest do not cost that much as well, which will allow you to save and do a lot more things.

2. Mix and match

If you are a fan of quirky things, then Bucharest is undoubtedly the city for you. At the end of 20th century, Bucharest was influenced by French culture and adapted the Art Nouveau architecture. This grandeur however has faded over time and now mixed with buildings from other era, including Neo-Romanian and communist era style. This combination of different architecture styles creates a one-of-a-kind and evocative aesthetic.

3. Little Paris

Bucharest was once known as “Paris of the east” before the city was brutally disfigured during the ruling of communist dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu. Fortunately, we can still find remnants of the French inspired architecture in Lipscani, or Old Town. The cobbled streets lined with beautiful buildings will make you wonder if you’re in the right country. If that’s not enough to fool your friends, Bucharest even has its own Arch de Triomphe! The replica was built to celebrate Romania’s victories in World War I.

4. Dracula hunting

Did you know that Romania is home of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th century prince who is widely admired as a Romanian hero and the defender of Wallachia. He is said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write the bestselling novel Dracula. Head to Old Princely Court where Vlad founded the fortress of Bucharest over 500 years ago in his quest of defeating the Ottoman Turks.

5. World’s coolest bookshop

Even if you’re not a fan of books or bookstores, you must not skip Carturesti Carusel from your list when you’re in Bucharest! Translated to ‘Carousel of Lights’, the store opened in 2015 and is housed inside a restored 19th century building which has six floors and lovely minimal designs. You can find over 10,000 books, albums and DVDs, as well as a cafe on the top floor where you can wind down and have a cup of coffee while admiring a beautiful view of the city.
