"Improving IPR protection awareness is crucial to Canton Fair as we will nurture a culture of respect for originality and effort for innovation," said Xu Bing, Deputy Director General of the China Foreign Trade Centre. "Over the past 26 years, we have established a comprehensive IPR protection protocol for the fair by inviting experts from law enforcement agencies and trade dispute arbitration professionals to make sure that any cases are dealt with in a fair, just and open manner. During the 123rd session, our efforts resulted in a 22.7% reduction in the adjudication of infringement cases over the previous session. We're delighted to have made such progress in the last few years."

IPR protection enabling product innovation

Exhibitors at the Canton Fair have shown competitive product R&D capabilities as IPR protection has been promoted. The IPR protection protocols established for the Exhibition have helped companies generate new ideas and expand products lines to reach wider markets in the increasingly complex international economic and trade environment. Some highlights include:

  • Yancheng Glassman Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd, a crafts and electronic products manufacturer, has brought more than 50 new products to the Fair. The company has set up R&D teams in Hong Kong, Canada and France, and 75% of their 800 major products have obtained copyrights and been awarded patents.
  • Suzhou Maichiwei Import & Export Co., Ltd, a Xiamen-based sanitary wares company, has obtained patents for glass illuminating and Bluetooth painting in Japan, North America and the European Union. In addition to its continuous introduction of self-developed luminescent blankets and luminescent hats, it has also raised creative ideas such as incorporating fragrances and Bluetooth functionality into their new products, attracting many buyers at the Fair.

More measures to support a fair-trading environment

The on-site Canton Fair Complaint Station for IPR and Trade Disputes continues to provide consultation, protection and dispute resolution services by experts from the Guangdong Intellectual Property Office. In a move to better strengthen exhibitors' intellectual property rights, Canon Fair formulated a series of methods and regulations through the establishment of the Brand Zone, the Canton Fair Product Design and Trade Promotion Center, the Canton Fair Design Awards and more, aiming to foster a fair business environment that values innovation and respects IPR.
