Held under the theme "Homo Faber: A Rainbow Caravan," the 3rd Aichi Triennale has venues spread across the three cities of Nagoya, Okazaki, and Toyohashi, which is home to one of the country's largest expat Brazilian communities. The number of participating artists (individuals/groups) is the largest in the festival's history, with 119 artists from 38 countries/regions. The festival made a good start with over 10,000 visitors on the first day.

On August 10, the eve of the opening, there was an opening performance by Dani LIMA from Brazil, with a reception attended by nearly 1,500 artists and guests celebrating the start of their 74-day "journey." The Triennale's artistic director Chihiro MINATO remarked in his reception address, "Humans have been on an ongoing, creative journey since time immemorial. In what ways can those of us living today maintain this journey, and carry it into the future? Artists from all parts of the country and the world have gathered in Aichi, bringing with them wonderful works of art. I wish to share this precious opportunity with as many people as possible."

The festival's opera production, "The Magic Flute," will open in mid-September. Expected to start on October 6 is Rainbow Weeks, which will include performances and workshops by 10 artists and companies, including Israel Galvan and Company DCA led by Philippe Decoufle.

Also expected in October is a two-day international symposium inviting experts such as arts festival directors and curators from Japan and abroad, and people involved in the culture and arts of Aichi Prefecture. The symposium aims to introduce external perspectives to explore, in the context of the Aichi Triennale now in its third incarnation, ways of helping arts and culture flourish and take root.

The Aichi Triennale, showcasing both contemporary visual art (international art exhibition, film, etc.) and stage performances (including dance/opera) will run for 74 days until October 23, 2016.
