Langkawi, Malaysia, 26 July 2023- The former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was named the first ever recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural IBR Global Maritime and Aerospace Awards (IBR GMA Awards) which was held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in Langkawi on 26 May 2023.
The IBR GMA Awards Gala Dinner and Presentation Ceremony was held in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2023 – the largest aerospace and maritime show in the Asia-Pacific.
As the progenitor of LIMA in 1991, Tun Dr Mahathir played a key role in starting Malaysia on the path to becoming a regional hub for the aerospace and maritime industries. Given that the IBR GMA Awards were aimed at celebrating the achievements of leaders in the two sectors, it was only apt that he was named the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award which is given to the individual who has done the most to drive the two industries forward.
In her citation, Dato’ Beatrice Nirmala – CEO of The IBR Asia Group, the organisers of the IBR GMA Awards, paid tribute to the former Premier saying, “From our world-renowned airport at KLIA, to our highly-regarded ship building and ship repair industries, to how Malaysia is now positioned as a hub for aerospace manufacturing and engineering. These are his legacies.”
Having flown into Langkawi from Tokyo, just an hour before the presentation of the Award, Tun Dr Mahathir entered the Ballroom at MIEC to a thunderous standing ovation. He then took to the stage to receive the trophy from Dato’ Beatrice before giving an acceptance speech that caught everyone spellbound by its humility and vision.
“I won’t have been able to achieve all these things without the help of many of my colleagues in the Cabinet and in the Service. Because of them, this has become a reality. And I am glad that every government that comes into power in Malaysia continues to hold this LIMA exhibition. I hope we will continue to see future LIMAs. The aerospace and maritime industries are progressing tremendously. What is possible today, was not possible before. And I expect that what is possible in the future will be far greater than what is possible today.” - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad
