BEIJING, January 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Gridsum Technology, China's leading provider of big data technology, appointed John Liu as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), to pursue further achievement in technology innovations and bring the company to a new milestone. Mr. John Liu has extensive experience in software engineering as well as research and development management; he will be responsible for directing the company's technology strategy and leading the overall product research and development effort.

"As a technology-based enterprise, Gridsum always takes innovation and excellence as its core value, technology research and development is our top priority at all time," said Guosheng Qi, Chairman and CEO of Gridsum. "Our R&D team has grown into a big family of more than 100 staff from only 4 people when I first started the company. We have overcome a lot of difficulties in the past years and entered a stage of explosive expansion. With rapid growth, we are facing more and greater challenges. I believe John's joining will start a new chapter in Gridsum's development and will bring us to a higher level."

John is a software engineering leader with 20+ years of industry experience, and has a solid track record of managing, designing, building, shipping, and supporting high quality software products and Internet services. He is an expert in a number of software technologies with special interests in web search, data mining and analysis, binary technologies, compilers, program performance analysis and optimization.

Prior to joining Gridsum, John spent more than 16 years with Microsoft in various engineering and management roles in both research and development organizations. As a founding member and key contributor of Microsoft Search Technology Center Asia, he built up the development organization from just a few engineers to the present size of over 1,000. In the software engineering field, he managed the Microsoft Research software performance optimization team that contributed to double-digit performance enhancement of Windows, Office, and SQL Server lines of products. His significant contribution was recognized by the Windows team with the Windows Outstanding Contribution Award and by Microsoft Research with the Gold Star Award.

Before his successful career at Microsoft, John worked at Hewlett Packard High Level Optimizer Group as a software design engineer. He graduated from Tsinghua University with Outstanding Graduate Award and earned MSCS from University of Pittsburgh. John owns multiple software patents in his specialized field.

As early as in 2005, when Gridsum Technology was founded, the founders foresaw the explosion of data along with the development of Internet. Calculations as simple as "Sum" will require "Grid Computing" (which used to be synonymous to "Distributed Computing") when the amount of data is large enough. This is why the company named itself "GRIDSUM": "Grid" plus "Sum". In the following few years, Gridsum developed a series of data analysis products and continued enriching its family of products, which have been widely adopted by over 600 well-known international companies and 3,000 government institutions and made remarkable achievements. Facts have proved that today, 9 years after Gridsum was founded, the big data wave has swept the globe, changed the Internet and IT industry, and is penetrating into government, finance, media, legal service and all the other industries at an alarming rate. Guosheng Qi further indicated: "In the future, Gridsum will continue focusing on the research and development of big data technology, leading the development of data technology, and providing first-class business intelligence solutions for more businesses and organizations to help them explore the huge potential of big data and then create more business values."

As a company born and raised locally in China, Gridsum was chosen as the first Chinese firm in Microsoft's BizSpark One program in 2009. It was awarded "Deloitte 2013 Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific Company and 50 China Company", "100 Zhongguancun High-growth Company", and more in 2013. Gridsum places great importance on intellectual property. In 2014, more than 360 patent applications were submitted. The capacity of innovation of Gridsum has attracted great attention from the Chinese government. In March 2012, the State Information Center of China and Gridsum formed a strategic partnership and together established the Center for Network Governance. By the end of 2014, the Center had provided big data technology and services for more than 3,000 government institutions at all levels.
