In 2010, China's net imports of coal will exceed last year's. Imports will reach 12 million tons, while in the second half, coking coal prices will see a downward trend.
China has been a coal importer for a sustained period of time. The globalization of coal trade has had an effect on China's import coal market.
With the world economic recovery, the international demand for coal in increasing power has been weak. Current international prices overdraft future expectations and need a long period of time for adjustment. According to customs statistics, the net imports of coal reached 103 million tons in 2009, making China the #1 coal importing country.
In June 2010, China's imported coal prices were 101.61 dollars/ton, the same period of last year saw prices at 81.82 dollars/ton -- an increase of 24.19%. In June, the average price of imported coking was 142.87 dollars/ton. Last year it was 116.93 dollars/ton -- up 22.19%.
In the first half of 2010, coking coal resources experienced a shortage. The demand of coking coal slowed. When supply finally increased rapidly, the price declined. Downstream steel industry growth slowed, which further decreased steel consumption.
In the second half of the year, international coking coal supplies will have significantly increased. Coking coal imports will keep flat or experience a slight increase. Transportation issues should not restrict coking coal's new capacity.
