Asia Pacific Region's Mobile Health Market Growing at Exceptional Rate

SINGAPORE, Aug. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Accomplished speakers from the mobile health industry will be discussing this unique growth, along with new technological development and other issues at the HIMSS AsiaPac12 Conference. The presentations will cover topics such as tele stroke program harnessing, mobile disease surveillance systems, and mobile health technology on the iPad. The Conference will be held from 18-19 September 2012 at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

The substantial growth potential will be discussed in a panel presented by Jaikishan Rajaraman, Senior Director, Asia Pacific at the GSMA. Mr. Rajaraman will talk about a recent GSMA report, "Touching Lives through Mobile Health: An assessment of the Global Market Opportunity". According to the report, the Asia Pacific region is set to become one of the world's largest mHealth markets by 2017. The mHealth services that represent the largest revenue opportunity across the region include remote monitoring, with a potential market share of 55 percent in 2017, and diagnostic services, with a market share of 24 per cent.

A key reason for this growth is for the reason that mobile technologies are nearly the only choice for connectivity in many countries throughout the region. In a market that already comprises of more than half the world's mobile connections, this presents a huge opportunity.

"With developed countries needing to reduce the cost of healthcare, and developing countries looking to roll out life-saving services to in-need communities, mobile technology offers the ability to deliver highly effective, scalable and affordable healthcare beyond the confines of a hospital or doctor's surgery," said Jaikishan Rajaraman, Senior Director, Asia Pacific, GSMA. "Mobile technology will be a key enabler of healthcare delivery reaching every corner of the region and I look forward to discussing this opportunity at HIMSS AsiaPac12."

Additional discussions on mobile health will be presented during the HIMSS AsiaPac12. On the first day of panels, a discussion will be presented on "Tele Stroke Program Harnessing Technology to Deliver and Optimize Acute Stroke Care" by Dr. Rajinder Singh, Consultant Neurologist at the National Neuroscience Institute/Integrated Health Information Systems in Singapore. His presentation will share the Tele-Stroke journey of IHiS and National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), Changi General Hospital (SGH) and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

On the second day of panels, a discussion will be led on the topic "Is the iPad The Way Forward for Mobile Health?" by Dr. Jean Evans, Chief Information Officer at South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, NSW Health in Australia. The presentation will provide the results of a 3-month review that occurred to trial an iPad in a clinical and an executive setting, in an acute care hospital in Sydney.

Dr. Ayedee Ace Domingo, Managing Director, Executive at Metahelix in the Philippines will next discuss "SPEED National Mobile Disease Surveillance System for Disasters". SPEED, or Surveillance Post Extreme Emergencies and Disasters, is a robust and cost effective national disease surveillance system in the Philippines using SMS and Internet for disaster response and policy making.

Apart from symposiums and education sessions, the HIMSS Asia Pac12 Exhibition will showcase hundreds of products and services for healthcare IT needs. Attendees will experience live demonstrations, technology updates, new products and services in the healthcare IT industry.

The conference and exhibition, which is organized by HIMSS Asia Pacific, is the seventh edition in the region.
