Mrs. Carrie Lam Officiates "Construction Industry Mega Fun Day cum 2010 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition" Organised by CIC

HONG KONG, July 10 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC), "Construction Industry Mega Fun Day cum 2010 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition" was successfully held today at the Sheung Shui Centre of Construction Industry Council Training Academy (CICTA) under the support of various government departments and organizations across the industry. The officiating guest at the opening ceremony is Mrs. Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development, HKSAR Government.

Ir Billy Wong, Chairman of Construction Industry Training Board welcomed everyone at the opening ceremony, "HKSAR Government has planned 100 million in the Budget Plan 2010-11 released in February this year for promoting training and re-training scheme of construction workers through CIC in the coming three years. By cooperating with other industry organisation, we hope to promote professionalism through increase publicity, and ultimately attract more youngsters to join this industry."

Mrs. Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development, HKSAR Government also delivered a speech. She expected expenditures in infrastructure projects will only increase on top of the 50 billion that have already in place. Hong Kong Government also value middle to small-scale development projects, for example, Lego passed 500 million for the implementation of 'Operation Building Bright' just yesterday. The future of construction industry lies on CIC to train up a group of youngsters, and encourages them to see construction as their life time careers.

Under the witness of Mrs. Carrie Lam, Mr. Lee Shing-see, Chairman of CIC and Ir Billy Wong, three contestants from the Competition vowed to have a fair competition with great enjoyment under any circumstances. The contestants also dedicated themselves towards working for a brighter future in the construction industry in Hong Kong.

After the opening ceremony, the guests went on a tour around the event site guided by staff from CICTA. They visited three main areas: "Competition Station", "Discovery Station" and "Freshmen Station". On the tour, the officiating guests performed tile drawing for "Construction Caring Fund".

"Construction Industry Mega Fun Day cum 2010 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition" is divided into seven zones. "Competition Station" where 2010 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition is held, "Terminal and Major Works Station" featuring upcoming key construction projects; "Construction Caring Fund" charity sales counter and different exhibitions, "IT Station" giving introduction and demonstration of construction computer software (BIM), "Discovery Station" featuring demonstrations and equipments try-outs, "Freshman Station" featuring overview of CICTA courses, career development and prospects, sharing by employers & outstanding graduates and on-site application & interview opportunities, "Outdoor Zone" showcasing display of construction cranes for photo-taking, and finally "Tea Zone" serving free snacks and drinks. Additionally, there were also three-on-three basketball competitions and dance performances.

"Construction Industry Mega Fun Day cum 2010 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition" will also be held tomorrow, July 11 at Sheung Shui Centre of CICTA from 9am to 4pm. Free shuttle bus services are arranged between Sheung Shui MTR Station (Choi Po Court exit) and Sheung Shui Training Centre.

About 2010 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition

The Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition (HKYSC) is a multi-disciplinary event held every other year. The Competition is jointly organised by the Vocational Training Council, the Clothing Industry Training Authority, the Construction Industry Council and the Industrial Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with strong support from industry, commerce, and tertiary institutions. Three competing trades namely painting, plumbing and tiling are coordinated by Construction Industry Council. The winners of the Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition might be representing Hong Kong region to participate at the 6th bi-annual Guangzhou/ Hong Kong/ Macau/ Chengdu Youth Skills Competition in Macau this year and the 41th bi-annual WorldSkills Competition organized in London, United Kingdom in 2011.
