TEDA Mobile Phone Production Reaches the 100 Million Milestone in 2006



TIANJIN, China, Jan. 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), also known as the famous "capital of mobile phones", announced today that the area has achieved a historical landmark in mobile phone production in 2006. TEDA is estimated to have produced 100 million sets of mobile phones last year, a growth of over 45% year-on-year, as the mobile phone industry becomes a major accelerator of Tianjin's rapid economic growth.

TEDA is one of the most important mobile phone production bases in China, contributing to 1/4 of all mobile phones in China and 1/10 worldwide. The mobile phone production industry accounts for 1/3 of Tianjin's production industries. Mobile phone giants such as Motorola, Samsung and Sanyo have long made their homes in TEDA, reshaping the Tianjin mobile phone industry and the economic scene in the region. In July 2006, Motorola welcomed its 200 millionth phone made in Tianjin at its TEDA production base, also Motorola's largest production base worldwide. In October 2006, the monthly production of Tianjin Samsung Telecom Technology Co., Ltd. reached 4.36 million sets, breaking the record of 4 million sets for the first time, and the Company lept to rank among the top of its national peers.

Developments in the mobile phone production industry have also attracted subsidiary industries to gather around Tianjin. Statistics reviewed that some 200 enterprises in TEDA and its surrounding areas specialize in add-valued services for Motorola and Samsung, some 400 companies concentrate in producing mobile phone accessories, creating an annual production value of up to RMB20 billion. Greg Brown, Executive Vice President and President of Networks & Enterprise Business, Motorola, said, "Motorola's plant in Tianjin will produce another 200 million sets of mobile phones within four years."

At the same time, active plans for industrial tradeshows and events are well underway, including the Tianjin International Mobile Industry Expo., in which TEDA exercises its professionalism and authority to attract mega-players in the mobile phone industry from both China and abroad, thus significantly promoting the development of the Tianjin mobile phone industry as well as China's.
