TEDA Becomes the First Hospital In China to Win Three JCI Gold Seals of Approval

TIANJIN, China, August 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- On July 31st, 2012, with the arrival of three certificates sent from the headquarters of Joint Commission International (JCI) in Chicago, the United States, TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "TICH") located in TEDA Tianjin, China, can proudly announce itself as the only hospital in China that has won three JCI gold seals of approval. It not only means TICH has successfully passed the JCI survey, but also signifies that the treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Heart Failure (HF) in TICH has obtained the accreditation of the Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) of the United States. TICH thus became the first hospital in Tianjin and the fifth in mainland China passing the JCI triennial survey, and also the first hospital in mainland China obtaining the certifications on cardiovascular programs.

JCI represents the highest level of the hospital management and services in the world, and the golden criteria for the quality assessment of the healthcare organizations worldwide. CCPC, the updated quality evaluation system launched by JCI specially for 15 types of diseases, is designed to identify whether the diagnosis and treatment of those diseases is up to the standard involving aspects of medical care, nursing care, nutrition, rehabilitation, prevention, etc.

TICH passed the JCI initial accreditation of the third-edition standards in June 2009. Over the past three years, while actively exploring in China's public hospital reform, TICH has also been committed to providing world-class medical services to every patient in strict accordance with the JCI standard. Such practices greatly enhanced the management and service level of the hospital and won the wide recognition of society. Three years later, TICH joyfully embraced the JCI triennial survey with the fourth-edition standards, much stricter than the third edition, and the CCPC survey on the treatment of AMI and HF.

From July 17th to 20th, four surveyors from the United States carried out the four-day survey on medical care, nursing care and administration. The survey mainly covered document review, the facility tour, medical records review, case tracing, system tracing (medicine administration, infection control, data usage, facility management and safety), staff qualifications and interviews with the leadership. The whole process was very detailed and precise, or even can be called "picky". The medical and nursing experts paid close attention to every single detail of the medical treatment during the visit to the outpatient clinic, emergency department, operating rooms, critical care units, catheter labs, intensive care units and regular wards. The administrative panel checked emergency exits, cafeterias, wards, server rooms, warehouses, waste stations and every other place which may pose a potential threat to the patients. Although the experts pointed out certain elements partially or did not meet the standards, the final results showed their recognition and compliment to the achievements of TICH.

From July 23rd to 25th, three JCI-CCPC surveyors took the on-site inspection to two cardiovascular clinical programs: Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Heart Failure (HF), according to the international medical guideline. It is mainly about whether the diagnosis and treatment measures are compliant with the CCPC standard, in terms of physicians, nurses, nutrition, rehabilitation, health education, follow-up and other aspects. After three days of strict hard work, both programs successfully passed the survey, implying that in TICH, the clinical pathway, disease management, key monitoring indicators, treatment management and the patient living quality improvement of AMI and HF have all reached JCI CCPC standards. Meanwhile, a comprehensive team has been established for the programs with members including physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, rehabilitation counselors, patients and their families. Not only did it change the current model that the patients usually know little about the diseases they suffer from or the treatment process, but also created the atmosphere for the patients and their families to take the initiative to participate in disease prevention and physical rehabilitation. This new model builds accessible channels of communication between the medical staff and the patients so as to positively follow up with the condition of the patients, prevent deterioration of the disease, reduce complications and enable the patients to return to normal life.

After an intense, meticulous and strict survey in seven days, all the surveyors shared the consensus that the management and services of TICH are compliant to JCI standards and the clinical care for AMI and HF has met up to CCPC standard.

Through the JCI survey and the CCPC assessment, the clinical care and services of TICH have won further recognition internationally, and the patient safety will be further guaranteed. TICH will take this as a new starting point and continue to provide patients domestically and abroad the high-quality service with the superb medical skill, reasonable costs and comfortable environment.
