Tudou Announces Support for H.264 Video Compression and Adobe Flash Player 9

SHANGHAI, China & CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 11 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Tudou.com ( http://www.tudou.com/aboutus ), China’s largest online video sharing site, today announced H.264 standard video support, making it the world’s first user-generated video site to provide viewers with better quality video in large scale. H.264 is the same standard for video compression that is deployed in Blu-Ray(R) and HD-DVD(R) high definition video players.

"For many reasons, Internet video is replacing broadcast television in China for those people born in 1980s. In fact, the average visitor to Tudou.com spends 72 minutes per month on our site. Most of them don’t watch TV at all," said Gary Wang, founder and CEO of Tudou.com. "The popularity of Internet video in China, our commitment to high-quality videos, and the fact that youngsters in China are eager to try new things and to spend longer time in front of computer screen, makes Tudou.com a natural fit to adopt high-quality video format in large scale." Responding to Adobe latest upgrade of flash player on Dec. 4th, Tudou.com released its support accordingly within 24 hours.

To experience user generated videos in better quality, visitors to Tudou.com will have to upgrade to Adobe Flash Player 9, which was recently released by Adobe Systems Incorporated. Users that choose not to upgrade immediately will still be able to view standard-quality clips on the site. Tudou plans to gradually move toward h.264 standard as internet users migrate to latest Adobe flash player.
